A fascinating event exploring how one belongs to a nation despite ones heritage in a world with an alarming rise in extreme right activity in recent years. Sivamohan Valluvan is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Warwick University. His expertise and research is into racism and ethnicity, nationalism and cosmopolitanism, consumerism, urban inequality, and social and cultural theory more broadly. His PhD thesis explored urban multiculture as lived in both London and Stockholm.
He'll be talking to the BBC Senior Broadcast journalist, Mike Wendling, who explains the ‘Alt-Right’ - the white nationalist, misogynist, far-right movement that rose to prominence during Donald Trump's successful election campaign in the United States, and highlights the extreme ideas that underpin the movement's thought. Wendling works in the BBC's Digital Current Affairs department, where he is a blogger and editor of BBC Trending. He produced the BBC radio series America's Own Extremists. He has also presented documentaries for Radio 4 and the BBC World Service on Native Americans and the Black Lives Matter movement.
