As we mark the centenary of WWI, the winner of the 2015 Wainwright Prize tells the unique story of the British soldiers of the Great War and their relationship with the animals and plants around them, and the impact it had on their will to survive.

John Lewis-Stempel is an award-winning writer predominantly known for his books on nature and history including Six Weeks, The War Behind The Wire and Meadowland.
